Compassion and Kindness
Growing up, my parents have faced health disparities due to their language barrier and inability to communicate/ express themselves well. Because they felt so frequently neglected in the healthcare setting in America, they distinctly remember their positive experiences. My mom still remembers one nurse from 21 years ago who attended to her needs and acted as her advocate when my mom could not speak any English at all. She remembers how the other nurses would neglect her or ignore her, but one nurse would patiently take her time even without being able to communicate properly. While this exchange happened over 21 years ago, my mom still holds the memories of this nurse dearly to her heart. After hearing that story, I have decided that I want to be the kind of nurse that will show compassion and kindness to clients always. I want my future clients to feel safe and cared for when I am providing care to them.
Honesty and Integrity
Integrity is one of the five tenets of Taekwondo, a sport I grew up practicing. Having integrity means to act with good character at all times, not just in the eye of others. As a nurse, we must be able to conduct ourselves with dignity even outside of the workplace. Having honesty and integrity also means that you know that you are responsible for your actions. If I make a calculation error or any medication mistake, I will have to take responsibility for the safety of my clients. In the second semester, we also learned about the cause and effect “fishbone diagram” to help reflect on one’s missteps. It is important to first identify the root of the cause and even more so to own up to your own mistakes. I find that extremely valuable to integrate into my life so that I can continuously perform competently as a nurse.
Dedication
While motivation is ephemeral, dedication is something that can last you a lifetime. There are many times where I doubt my abilities as a future nurse. I often feel drowned by all the responsibilities I have as the older daughter, as a dog mom, as a former small business owner, as a student, and as a worker. However, I remind myself of one of my favorites quotes "Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional". This quote helps me pick myself up everyday. I want to wake up everyday with a purpose and a goal. Although I am nowhere near where I aspire to be, I will continue to dedicate time and effort so I can one day be a confident and thriving nurse.
