A: Accountability: I make sure to always be punctual to clinicals and prepared with all required materials, such as penlight, pen, appropriate paperwork, stethoscope, etc.
B: Professional Identity: As a nursing student, I am doing my best to conduct myself in a professional manner. This is by wearing appropriate attire and by carrying myself with dignity, being compassionate and sensitive to other people’s situations, advocating for clients, teaching accurate material to the client, etc. I have learned as a nurse that being a nurse is an identity, meaning that I will have to strive to conduct myself in a manner appropriate to that of a nurse’s even outside of work.
C. Advocacy: One of the clients I was caring for was admitted due to altered mental status. She had a history of bipolar disorder, current manic, schizophrenia, and dementia. The patient was unable to speak and talk about her needs due to her altered mental status, so I continued to support her by staying with the client and offering her food. I constantly asked if she needed anything and listened to her when she attempted to speak.
D. Legal-ethical: As a student and future nurse, I believe it is important to act according to the hospital’s or facility’s policies and to apply professional standards of care. For example, as nurses we must perform proper hygiene, promote a safe environment, provide teachings to the client and client’s family, provide patient-centered care, and much more. At all times we must make sure that we are performing the 6 rights of medication, providing privacy & adhering to HIPPA, and performing within our scope of practice.
E. Leadership-management: An example of when I used leadership skills is when I was acting as a student liaison. One of the student nurses was busy giving medications to their client when another one of her clients needed a brief change. I stepped in and told her I could change the client’s briefs, while she continues to give her medications. I was able to assist my peer and delegate tasks efficiently.
